Jorinde van Klinken claimed a second silver medal for the Dutch team at the world athletics championships in the women’s discus, after finishing fourth in the previous two editions.
The 25-year-old threw 67.50 metres in the first round, a distance only beaten by American pre-tournament favourite Valarie Allman with 69.48 metres.
“I’m the first Dutch woman ever to win a world championship medal at the discus,” Van Klinken said. “I can be massively proud of myself.”
She added she was disappointed that she was unable to improve on her first-round throw. ”Usually my first throw isn’t my furthest, which confirms my feeling that there was more to come today,” she said.
Jessica Schilder is one of the favourites for the shot put title later in the week, having set a Dutch record of 20.47 metres earlier this season. She took bronze at the event in Eugene three years ago.
On Friday the mixed 4x400m relay team took silver behind the USA in a time of 3:09.96. Femke Bol moved up from fifth place to second on the final leg but was too far behind to repeat her heroics of last year’s Olympic final in Paris.
Later on Monday there are medal chances for the Netherlands in the women’s 100m hurdles, with Nadine Visser running in the semi-finals and potentially the final, while Menno Vloon is competing in the men’s pole vault final.
Niels Laros, one of the favourites for the 1,500 metres, goes in the semi-finals along with compatriot Stefan Nillessen, while Norwegian multiple champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen was elimiinated in the heats.
Hammer thrower Denzel Comenentia reached his first major final at the age of 29 with a throw of 75.91 metres in the final qualifying round, just enough to go through as the 12th best competitor.
