Pepernoten, the traditional small ginger biscuits handed around in the run up to the Sinterklaas celebrations on December 5, have been spotted 128 days ahead of the party at two supermarkets.
Jumbo Abbas in Gieten and Plus Brughuis in Almelo are making sales while the sun shines. Plus Brughuis manager Jorik said the summer sale of the traditionally wintry snack at his supermarket is an annual “stunt”.
Reactions to his Facebook message announcing the availability of the pepernoten are mixed, he told the AD, from “far too early” to “pepernoten belong to Sinterklaas and should only be sold around that time”.

But a sizeable number of clients disagree; some 200 bags were sold within a week. “So some people appreciate what we are doing”, said Jorik.
The first pepernoten tend to appear in the big supermarket chains in late August.
