Self-employed midwives, roofers and hairdressers face the highest costs for disability insurance in the Netherlands, a comparison of premiums by website AOVzzp.nl has shown.

The analysis compared 64 freelance occupations using data from several major insurers. A 35-year-old self-employed midwife insuring themselves for a gross monthly payout of €3,000 pays an average premium of €446 per month until retirement at 67 – the most of any profession.

Hairdressers pay nearly as much at €444, followed by roofers at €391. In the case of roofers, however, policies typically only run until age 62, reflecting the physical risk of the job.

Disability insurance (AOV) is not yet mandatory for self-employed people in the Netherlands but the government is working on a basic disability insurance scheme.

The difference in monthly premiums between the cheapest and most expensive occupations can reach €360 under identical conditions, the report said.

Jobs with high physical demands consistently top the rankings. Bricklayers, carpenters, window cleaners, scaffolders, painters and tilers are all among the most expensive to insure.

At the other end of the scale, IT consultants pay an average of just €194 per month. Other low-premium professions include financial advisers, bookkeepers, copywriters and notaries.

The study was based on a 35-year-old freelancer insuring themselves for €3,000 gross per month, with a three-month waiting period.
