Rush hour trains around Rotterdam were cancelled for around two hours on Wednesday morning as a result of a security system failure.
The stoppage disrupted services to Utrecht, The Hague and Leiden for around two hours from 7.30am. InterCity direct trains to Schiphol airport and the high-speed line between Rotterdam and Breda were also affected.
A spokesman for track operator ProRail said the problems arose at around 6am in the security system, which monitors trains, signals and points. “If that’s not working properly, the trains can’t run safely,” said a spokesman.
Engineers restored the system at 8am, only for it to go down again half an hour later. Regular services eventually resumed at 9.30am.
ProRail said it was investigating the cause of the fault.
It is the second time in less than a week that system failures have caused major disruption around Rotterdam. The Willemspoortunnel was closed last weekend when the electricity network went down, forcing services between Rotterdam Centraal and Rotterdam Zuid to be suspended, including the high-speed line.
