The 107th edition of the Nijmegen Vierdaagse, or four-day march, got underway in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with marchers covering 30, 40 or 50 kilometres a day.
More than 45,000 walkers holding 82 different nationalities are taking part in this year’s event, which takes a different route through Gelderland, Brabant and Limburg each day.
The biggest group of participants are in their 60s – they account for almost 25% of all participants. The oldest walker this year is 94, the youngest 11. Some 210 walkers are taking part in the event for the 25th time, while 62 have participated 50 times or more.
This year, weather bureau Weeronline is predicting good walking weather for Tuesday and Wednesday with a maximum of 23° and an occasional shower to cool in.

Thursday and Friday will be hotter, with temperatures that can climb up to 30°, particularly on Friday which may also feature a thunder storm.
