Staff at the agency used by the Dutch government to support unaccompanied child refugees committed fraud worth €220,000, housing minister Mona Keijzer has told parliament.

Bank cards were used to make two cash withdrawals from Nidos’s accounts by staff members who have since been dismissed, Keijzer wrote in a letter to MPs.

In one case the money has been repaid, while the other is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Keijzer said Nidos had taken “adequate measures” to avoid a repeat of the incident and a working group had been set up to come up with permanent solutions, such as minimising the use of cash by the agency.

The minister, who took over responsibility for asylum seekers’ accommodation after the far-right PVV pulled out of the cabinet, was required to report the fraud because the amount involved was more than €100,000.
