A Dutch national has been arrested in Indonesia on suspicion of involvement in an international drug smuggling operation, Indonesian media reported on Saturday.

The man, given the initials LT, is accused of trying to smuggle almost 1200 ecstasy pills disguised as tins of sweets and a superman outfit into the holiday island of Bali.

He and a German national, who is said to have supplied the drug, have been arrested. The drugs were found by customs officials in UPS packages sent from Germany, local media reported.

The Dutch foreign ministry has not yet confirmed the arrest.

According to RTL Nieuws, the Dutch suspect could face the death penalty although in practice, would probably mean life in prison. No foreigners have been executed in Indonesia since 2016 although nearly 100 remain on death row.
